Introduction

Up until this point, we have only explored carbon-based organic compounds that have other elements (i.e. halides) as simple functional groups.  In this lesson we are going to look at organic compounds that often form with nitrogen in them, often the nitrogen found in the air or the nitrogen found in the soil.   We are going to scratch the surface and explore the most common ways that nitrogen is found in organic molecules so that you are more familiar with them and naming them when we explore Addition Polymers and Condensation Polymers in the last two lessons in Organic Chemistry.

Consider the following questions as you complete this lesson:

  • What are Amines?
  • What are Nitro Compounds?
  • What are Nitriles?
  • How do I name and draw Amines, Nitro Compounds, and Nitriles?
  • What other Nitrogen-Containing compounds are there?
