A strike is where two or more employees refuse to work. Employees will go on strike typically in an effort to compell the employer to agree to terms and conditions of employment. A lock out occurs when an employer refuses to employ his/her employees, suspend work or close the establishment down. For the same reason employees would go on strike, only, it would be for the employees to agree to terms and conditions of employment. The government may force workers back to the workplace through legislation if for example the workers on strike or the employers locking them out did so illegally. Another important aspect is how important many workers are to our society and how detrimental it can be to our economy and citizerns if we lose them, even for a short period of time. Also, the governments ability to do so was reinforced when a supreme court ruled that workers did not have the constitutionally protected right to strike. Air Canada workers went on strike over disagreements with their employers wages and pension cuts. Canada post workers were striking over proposed salary and pension cuts.
