1) A strike includes a cessation of work, a refusal to work, or a refusal to continue to work, by two or more employees for the purpose of compelling their employer to agree to terms of conditions of employment.

2) Workers may go on strike if they desire improvements in their workplace, for better wages, shorter working days, to petition against unfair rules. Generally, they seek to improve conditions.

3) A lock out is when an employer closes a place of employment, suspends work, or refuses to employ employees for the purpose of compelling employees to agree to terms of conditions of employment.

4) A worker would be locked out in an attempt by the employer to compel the employee to agree to terms set by the employer.

5) The Canadian Government can force (through legislation) Air Canada and Canada Post workers back to work to end labour unrest and restore important services. This is usually a last-resort, and is also usually utilized when the groups in question are deemed essential. This method can also be used to end an illegal strike or lockout.

6) Air Canada workers were striking to protest pension cuts to new employees.

7) Canada Post workers were striking to petition about the safety and health of letter carriers and other employers, the handling of sick days, and wage issues.
